1. Get a jar with a lid.
2. Get a hammer and a nail.
3. Pound at least 7 holes in the lid.
4. Pull up some grass.
5. Stuff grass in jar.
6. Wait for twilight.

**The secret to reaping a bumper crop of fireflies is starting the hunt at twilight. (Also must note, we in the more northern states have a lingering twilight, which aids in the capture rate.) Twilight is dark enough so that one can see the flare of the firefly, but light enough so that one can follow the insect's path once the flare goes off.**

7. A soft, cupping movement of the hand is advised.
8. Gently gather the insect in.
9. Open the jar and quickly slip in the firefly.
10. Repeat.
11. After first firefly captured, must add a thump to the top of the jar before adding more bugs.

After the catch has been duly oohed and aahed over, open jar and let the fireflies free.

Have fun!

New Camera

I recently upgraded my camera! It was a little hard to do. I hated to spend the money, but I was doing studio work that required a camera that could work with strobe lights, and my little Fuji didn't, without a major work-around. It also had very few settings that could be used (ISO being one of them). I had researched cameras and so, when my tax refund came, I purchased a Nikon D80.

I purchased it, then didn't use it for a week. Buyer's remorse? Lack of confidence? Who knows. Eventually I did use it (had a studio session coming up). Now, I wouldn't be parted from it.

Stormy Weather!

Got caught by another storm yesterday, a real soaker that lasted from about 4 to 10. As often happens lately, lost power about 9:00 p.m.

Let me tell you about "no power" in the country.

  • Water is well-water, which needs a pump. No electricity, no pump, no water.
  • Dark in the country isn't very dark when the power is on. Most farmsteads have a yardlight. When the power goes off, the countryside becomes very dark.
  • Fireflies are AWESOME when there is no power. They are the only light in the dark, and it is magnificent! Wow!!
  • When power returns, the first indication will often be the sump-pump, working in the cellar.

I was glad that the power came back on sometime between 2:30 and 5:00 a.m.

And how is your day?

Tagged!
I got tagged by Quantum Tea for another meme:

The Rules:

Each player answers the questions about themselves. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

What I was doing 10 years ago:
June 1998: Going to Montana! Right about this time. There was still snow around. It was a beautiful trip.

What 5 things are on on my to-do list for today (not in any particular order):
Print more letters for our letter-writing campaign at work, vacuum the living room, get billings done at work, pay a couple of bills, watch Hell's Kitchen.

Snacks I enjoy:
Oreos. Pickles rollups. Crackers with cheese.

Things I would do if I was a billionaire:
Quit work. Pay off all my bills. Travel around the world and visit all my blogging friends. Buy back Grandpa's tractor. Buy a BIG tractor. Buy the farm.

Places I have lived:

Lansing, Grand Ledge, Michigan, and Upland, Indiana.

and I'm going to tag: Julie, Roscoe, Susan, Tien, Gail, Patti, and Kathryn. And anyone else that wants to play!

Storm Outcome

The 4:00 p.m. storm Sunday was the killer one, literally. The route I take to work, Mount Hope Highway, took the brunt of it. A woman was working on her trailer-camper, readying it for vacation. It fell over on her, killing her. There were so many trees and wires down that it took 20 minutes for the rescue crew to get to her. The highway looks like a war zone. Three barns that I have admired are either flattened or have lost much of their timber.

This was a straight line wind of about 85 miles per hour. Tornadoes aren't the only killers. I was lucky, I was actually driving when it hit. I'll be more careful in the future.

Power!

Yes! The lights are on! I came home last night expecting to work around the place for a couple of hours and then head back to town, but . . . the power is on! Yay! Work had been very tiring. I work for a heating and air conditioning company. With the heat and the storms, plus the letter campaign we're carrying on now, the phones never stopped ringing. I was very glad to be able to crash here, after I'd picked up a bunch more branches and sticks that had fallen.

And how are you?

Bottom

I think I've hit bottom. Still working on the arthritis. I had a cortisone shot in the knee three weeks ago: that has relieved things so that I don't have to take drugs. I'm going for another round of therapy. Something isn't right, though, 'cause I'm limping more now than I did when I started. What have I screwed up?

And then, as these medical things often do, one thing leads to another. My liver count was slightly elevated, so I had to have a liver ultrasound. Almost cried when I went in for it: wish I'd had the privilege of going in for a baby ultrasound. Got the results back. Fatty liver disease. Nothing terrible, except I need to lose weight. And I haven't been able to do that for 30 years. *sigh* So I'm frustrated, and a little scared, and mad at myself for letting this happen, and just in general I feel as if I've hit bottom.

Of course, you know the only way now, right?
