Sparkly morning

Hopefully we won't have too many more "sparkly" mornings.

Winter Sense, eh? Hmmm

Your Winter Sense is Sight

You are a very visual person, and some of your strongest memories are around things you've seen in your life.

You simply like the way winter looks. This season may seem dead to most people, but it's very alive to you.

You enjoy all the sites of winter - from starry winter nights to dancing holiday lights.

You think this is the most beautiful time of the year. Snow makes everything a little more magical.

Pearl is one of my nicknames

But I don't really think this fits.

You Are a Cream Pearl

You are emotionally stable and serene. You have cultivated gratitude and peace in your life.

You are both intensely alive and totally easygoing. You roll with the punches.

You are good natured and purposely try to keep things simple. You deflect drama.

Friends turn to you during times of trouble. You are optimistic and reassuring.

More Snow

What was pretty and enchanting in December is getting awfully old in February. *sigh* Another ten inches yesterday and today. I moved the sled from its ornamental spot in front of the studio barn up to the garage. It may come in handy!

Heat Wave

We didn't have a January thaw this year, but we surely had a February one. We hit 55 degrees F two days in a row. Living on the farm you can see upclose the joys of a thaw . . . the fields lose their water and it comes rolling through to the drainage ditches. Unfortunately, one of the tiles in the field is broken, so I get a lot of water. Fortunately, the tiles in the yard were routed a oouple of years ago and the lake has subsided.

You Are a Down to Earth Dreamer

Just because you're practical, it doesn't mean you don't dream.

You just like to put your dreams into action more than most people.

At first you dream big, but then you stop and think... Can your dream actually be achieved?

You're willing to rethink and refine your dream until it is possible. And then you go act on it!

February Confession

Mourning doves calling make me sad, as does a certain wind through the trees.

Snow Day!

We didn't get near as much snow as predicted here in mid-Michigan, but with the winds and drifting I'm doing a snow day thing. This picture was taken on Sunday, before the snow hit.

My project for the day is working in the pantry. You know how that goes, storage places tend to get out of whack if not checked frequently, and mine has piles of things that need to be organized. It's been fun!

Going to go look for the groundhog (we call them woodchucks) this afternoon!!

Retro TV

I went without television for fourteen months. Last August I purchased a new little tv set that I use with rabbit ears. One of my favorite stations is RetroTV. This morning we're watching (well listening to) Lassie (the very early version), Rifleman, and Wagon Train. I find these way more enjoyable than present day fare. I guess I'm getting old!

January Departures

January, such a dark month. And a sad month this year, as our company mourns the loss of two former employees.

Buck was a former saleman. He retired in the 90's, but didn't retire from life. He was active in civic activities, played tennis, took care of his yards and gardens and the neighbors too. His wife was a nutritionist who kept him in peak health. He was 89 and going great, but he fell and hit his head. Brain bleeding occurred and he passed.

Buck's father had been a professor. That must have impacted Buck, for he was a natural teacher. I mean, he even taught us how Easter is determined: First Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. And it's late this year.

Country Strong

Was actually quite weak.

A BEAUTIFUL morning

First Week gone!

Wow. Turn the page, and the first week of 2011 has disappeared. That sure went fast! One of the problems with having an accounting related job: the last five days of a month and the first five are busy busy.

It's a gorgeous winter morning up here in Michigan. Very cold, fresh snow yesterday, and sunshine. The trees are coated in hoarfrost. I'm heading out for pictures in a few minutes.

Sunday, January 02, 2011

So now on to 2011

Well, yes. Tomorrow is my birthday. And it is one that ends in nine. Utoh. But I've decided not to wallow in the aging thing. I'm following the example of the publisher of a local women's magazine. She turned 40!! (gasp, so old) this year and decided to give herself a challenge of doing new things each month. Well, hey, if it works for the young'uns it should work even better for the old'uns, eh? So I have set a dozen projects for this last year of the 50's. (I also have a big master sixty by sixty list, but that's another story.)

So here is what I'll be up to this coming year:

January: Spa Day. A full day. This is probably the priciest of the projects, but I've never done it, and it is time.

February: Knit a scarf. Now, I've done that when I was younger, but I'd like to try again with the new yarns.

March: Play "Secrets" on the cello. I played the violin in high school. I now have my niece's cello here at the farm. Will attempt to teach myself to play or will enroll for classes at the local music shop, and want to learn to play that one piece.

April: Shoot pictures of all the barns in my township, and visit with the owners to get the stories that they know. Two barns have gone down in the last year. I need to get this project done.

May: Create an herb garden in one of the old horse troughs.

June: Get a passport.

July: Shoot a gun

August: Buy a wig

September: Learn to recognize 30 fonts.

October: Ride a motorcycle

November: Sing Karaoke. (Definitely gonna have to have a few lessons before this)

December: One of my ongoing projects through the year will be to sell 100 books to one of the bookstores. The proceeds will be tabulated, and in December I will take the money and other things I have collected to Hannah's House, a home for single moms. It became apparent to me this year that I needed to remember the basics of what Christmas is all about.

There ya have it!

Good-bye 2010

I have to say, i'm rather glad to say good-bye to 2010. It was just one of those cranky years that had more downs than ups. *sigh* I have taken stock of that situation, however, and have realized certain attitude adjustments on my part will make 2011 go ever so much more smoothly.

There were two really cool things that I became a part of in 2010 that will add to the fun of 2011. The first occurred as I worked on a search for a web designer for our company website. As part of this search, two of the firms we interviewed suggested tweeting and fbing for the company. The twitter thing brought us into contact with the Reotown Commercial Association. I should mention that the company I work for is located in an industrial park on the site of the old REO plant. We joined and I'm the representative and 2011 should be an interesting year as this section of town works to reinvent itself.

Second thing: my brother and I established a very small photography business. We have the DBA, the sales tax license, a little studio in the barn, and a few customers. We're curious to see where this will take us in 2011.

So on to the next adventures! Happy New Year to all of you!!

You Are Reasonable

You're the type of person who makes sound and logical decisions. You are very down to earth.

You're a bastion of sanity in this insane world, and people know that they can count on you.

You aren't likely to get swept away in the moment. You have both feet firmly planted on the ground.

You are modest and humble. You always keep your ego in check and sometimes wonder why others can't do the same!

Time for a Quiz!

You Are Apples

You have simple tastes in food, and you appreciate a basic, clean flavor. You don't think eating or cooking should be complicated.

In fact, you're really not one for cooking much at all. Your best meals come together quickly and don't require many ingredients.

If anything, you're the type of person who's more likely to pull out the oven mitts and bake every so often.

Chocolate chip cookies are one of your favorite things to smell baking, and it goes without saying that you love apple pie.

Miz Mayor?

I kind of like the sounds of that!

You Should Be Elected Mayor

You're the type of person who will never forget where you came from. Roots are important to you.

When it comes to what's important, friends and family always come first. You believe charity starts at home.

You tend to know what's going on with everyone in your neighborhood. You aren't a gossip, but you are involved.

You are proud of where you come from, and you're dedicated to making your hometown a better place.

Five years from now, you'll be living a calmer, less hectic life.

You are working hard at managing the chaos in your life right now, and eventually that will pay off for you.

They were dancing around separately all afternoon. Guess it really was a mating dance, because this is how they were carrying on in the late afternoon.

purple, eh?

You Need Some Purple in Your Life

Purple will make you feel ambitious, independent, and creative.

And with a little purple, you will project an aura of individuality.

If you want more extravagance, you've got to get a little purple in your life!

For extra punch: Combine purple with green or orange

The downside of purple: It can evoke sad feelings

The consequences of more purple in your life:

You will feel an increase in your artistic abilities

You will find balance in the most chaotic parts of your life

You will feel calm and will be hard to disturb

Ack! I've become my Grandparents!

It became very obvious to me today as I wandered the counter at the pharmacy that I have reached the age my grandparents were when I first knew them. The choice at the counter: Ducalax vs Milk of Magnesia. Grandma Bea vs Grandma Lora. Oh my.

Make Those Memories

Memories. Good memories. They've been flooding back this last couple weeks, first as I showed Julie from Oz some of my favorite places in Michigan, and then again yesterday as we took a backroad home from my niece's 4th of July picnic.

My folks never had a lot of money, they had a lot of kids, but somehow they conspired to give us camping vacations throughout the state of Michigan each year. Every 4th year or so, we would go on a BIG trip out-of-state. It took an amazing amount of planning, saving, and organizing, and my father bribing my mother as she didn't even really like camping, but wow, what fun we had.

And the memories are sweet decades later.

Thanks, folks!
