I hate driving over large bridges for this reason. We had one, the Westgate Bridge, collapse while it was still being built. Lots of workers were killed. That was in the '70s I think.
We have a five-mile-long that connects the upper Peninsula with the lower Peninsula. It's called the Mackinac Bridge, and it is celebrating its 50th birthday. There have never been any problems, but I always have to watch just straight ahead when I cross it.
They say it was structural failure and I'm wondering why no-one picked up any warning signs. I'd imagine there'd be a few cracks or something happening earlier on.

warning signs were known 2 years ago. lots of similar bridge probs in usa, long known, long ignored.
Well, in that case, it's more than just tragic. I guess no-one wanted to spend the money on repairs. Too late now!
